Why 5K

Well doesn't that sound more significant than 3.2 miles? I did the Rex Lee Run last Saturday and had a great time. Jack called me "5K-er" and told me to win. It was great to have Steve and the kids cheer me on.

I've been enjoying my new relationship with running. A couple problems have arised though. First off, I'm learning to run outside more often because the treadmill is just way easier (pacing, no hills). I try to increase my speed, but now I need to do longer runs so I should probably decrease the speed, but then I get impatient. I also find that my breathing is really shallow. I would love tips! Oh and I've read a bit about tying shoes differently...any advice?

This is Griffin on the way home from the run. He's totally wiped out!

I love running outside because I don't worry at all about my speed or pace. I just run. I set time goals instead of speed or distance goals (which I always also set on the treadmill!). I've never heard anything about shoe lacing! but you can fix your shallow breathing issue by moving! Being at your high elevation probably makes it tougher to breathe. Running in ohio feels smoother on my lungs- if that's even possible :)

Way to go! I don't have any magical suggestions except that Dick's sporting goods allows you to purchase a few pairs of running shoes. You take them home and try them out, then return the ones you don't want. I know, crazy!

Here are a couple of different ideas about lacing shoes. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-267--12334-0,00.html I use a box where the top of the foot isn't laced over and the ankle is sinched in. You'll have to take a look at mine or Janel's shoes to see. We got them at the runner's corner they can show you too. Breathing shallow is probably because of cold air that irritates the lungs. As it warms up it may improve. Also try some interval/spring training. Run fast for 1 minutes then walk/jog for 2 minutes. doing ten sets will give you a 30 minutes workout. Don't forget to warm up first. The sprints will help you expand your lungs. Who do you run with and when. Janel wants to run so bad but just doesn't have anyone to go with.

So, let's see, you run and Griff is wiped? That makes sense. It makes me tired too. :)

WAHOOOOOOOO!! You go! I am totally in LOVE with my Mizunos (Spelling?) THey're like running on pillows. I always double knotted the laces. Come do the Speedy Spaniard with me in Spanish Fork on July 24. It's the BEST 10K EVER!!!

love the pics. And I wish we lived close and could run together. When? I'm sure I don't know. it's tricky to squeeze in the time. I LOVE running outside because I don't watch that darn computer on the treadmill and forget how far I've come. I'm sure it's slower, but I don't care!

I do love running although I get bored easily (and don't even talk to me about treadmills. Can't do 'em). Hey, congrats on moving to Chicago! I just told Geof. that we're gonna come stay with you guys. Sound good? (; Hey, I know we barely know each other, but that's okay. I'm sure we'd be great friends (and to be honest, I'd love a good excuse to visit Chicago, again).

Awesome that you are out running! I may see you at some of the 5k's!! Running with the angels I hear is a beautiful run through Thanksgiving point gardens! See you on the road.
